SiftDrive

About

Built by someone with the same problem.

SiftDrive started with a drawer of twenty-three external hard disks and no idea what was on any of them. Everything here exists because that question turned out to be genuinely hard to answer.

Why it works the way it does

Most of the difficult decisions in this product are about restraint. It would be easier to upload everything and sort it out on a server; it would be easier to remove duplicates outright than to quarantine them, journal every move and support an undo; it would be easier to state one confident number for reclaimable space than to explain that on some filesystems the honest answer is “at most”.

Each of those would have made the product simpler and worse. Software that reorganises the only copy of somebody's photographs has to be conservative in ways that ordinary software does not.

The company

SiftDrive is a product of Jacked Trade LLC, a Delaware company that also runs SubTrack, a compliance tracker for general contractors. Same platform underneath, same standards, different pile of files.
